Preventive Dentistry
Prevention is the key to maintaining better dental health.
Ensuring dental and gum health is maintained with regular hygiene appointments is a key to preventative dentistry. Periodic dental X-rays (radiographs), part of our routine exam and hygiene, are paramount for early detection of dental decay and to monitor surrounding bone levels.
At Planet we use digital radiography to reduce radiation exposure with any necessary X-rays. Furthermore, designing our practice allowed the inclusion of an Orthopantomogram (OPG) to provide a quick insight into possible wisdom teeth eruption delays or orthodontic referral needs.
Prevention should always include a healthy wholefood anti-inflammatory diet while trying to keep to a low sugar, low acidic diet for our teeth. Certain nutrients are key for dental health including vitamin D, so ensuring your levels are optimal is a good start!
There have been many great Pioneers in dentistry such as Weston A. Price (westonprice.org), Melvin Page, Harold J. Kristal, and Ralph R. Steinman, who have studied the link between diet, tooth decay and tooth/ jaw misalignments. Many of the concepts in nutritional therapy and functional medicine were originally discovered by these dentists.
This research to coming to the fore once again as is the role of dental health to our overall health.
